This weekend, I totally outgeeked a geek. I should really be ahamed by this, but I was actually sort of proud in a way.
This Saturday, I decided to run some errands and wound up swinging by the local comic book store. Now, I'm not the biggest comic geek that there is, but there are one or two titles that pique my interest every now and again. I was primarily stopping in to pick up the latest issue of Toyfare magazine, so I pulled up, ran inside, and grabbed their last copy. I decided to browse upon the new release rack to see if anything interesting had come out that was worth me plonking down 3 bucks for, when I overheard the conversation between random comic book nerd and ubergeeky comic shop clerk. They were discussing Star Trek, and the subject ventured toward how "great an actor" Leonard Nimoy is.
Nerd: Yeah, Nimoy's done a lot of different stuff.
Clerk: Yeah, he's really talented. Hasn't he done some voice work?
Nerd: Uh-huh. He was Galvatron in Transformers The Movie.
Clerk: Oh yeah! I forgot about that. I haven't seen that in ages!
Nerd: I just picked up the special edition on DVD, it's got all these extra scenes on it!
At this point, my interest was piqued. There's no "Special Edition" of TF:TM on DVD that has been released here, and the only special features on the American DVD are some storyboards for scenes that were never shot and an interview with Vince DiCola.
Clerk: Really? What's in the deleted scenes?
Nerd: Well, there's this part where Spike say "Oh, Shit!" that wasn't in the original!
I was on my way to the counter at this point. I had to interject.
Me: Actually, that was in the original theatrical cut. It was deleted for the FHE Home video from 1987.
Nerd: Oh really? I didn't know that. That was pretty cool.
Clerk: Yeah, you know they also released a sequel to the movie but it was only available in Japan, right?
I could have walked away. I could have. But I just had to interject again.
Me: Actually, no. If anything can be considered a sequel to it, it's the Five Faces of Darkness miniseries, which aired in the U.S. after the movie. In Japan, they had an entirely different storyline by that point. The movie wasn't released for another three years and they called it "Matrix Forever."
Nerd: Oh wow. That's pretty cool.
Clerk: Yeah. Say, have either one of you guys seen the Robotech episode where blah blah blah...
At this point, my purchased were rang up, and I bolted for the door. I chose to assume that the clerk was including a third mystery person when he said "either of you guys", and I quickly left the establishment before embarrasing myself further because of my geekitude.
I came this close to returning to the store with my girlfriend in tow to redeem myself.
